New Era Technology Trumps Legacy Vendors

See how modern integration platforms are replacing expensive legacy vendors with flexible, developer-friendly solutions that actually work.
A new era has emerged, one in which the larger legacy companies no longer reign. A shift in technology has led to new needs for businesses, needs that enterprise software companies simply can no longer meet.
The New Enterprise is taking shape, with numerous systems, applications, services, APIs, and data sources working together to create a functioning ecosystem. As technology changes, business needs evolve, making way for a new integration model in which new pricing, Software as a Service, and open source systems play a critical role. In the age of SaaS applications, APIs, and “best of breed” approaches, legacy systems are simply not designed to take on the integration challenges of today’s IT world.
Legacy vendors are finding it increasingly difficult to remain competitive in this new era. In addition to lacking flexibility and agility, there are two areas in which these proprietary businesses are losing out on most - pricing and open source technology.
Companies, such as Oracle, have business models and pricing which include high upfront licensing and maintenance costs. Because of this model, they legacy vendors have had no problems generating significant income. These bloated technology stacks often sell large packaged solutions, trapping people in large long term contracts and selling them complicated and heavy weight products. Vendor lock-in restricts businesses from driving business forward as they are often unsatisfied and secured in contracts. As organizations turn to Software as a Service (SaaS) and open source solutions, which offer flexible annual subscription models, legacy enterprises are losing business. Large software companies are struggling to adapt to new technologies and new business needs and customers are beginning to look for solutions elsewhere.
In addition to the high upfront fees, a lack of focus on developers and open source solutions is also contributing to legacy vendors’ losses. With open source solutions growing in popularity, the importance of the developer community has increased. Developers are empowered, no longer do they need approval before implementing open source technology into their integration ecosystems. Cloud and open sources based integration platforms enable developers to manage and alter both code and production-ready deployments as necessary. Legacy vendors, however, are not enabling them in the same way, and instead continue to widen the gap between CTOs and developers.
Those who do have cloud based integration solutions in place, still face the challenges of bloat, high pricing, and lack of future-proof solutions. Integration between applications and legacy systems is also a concern for many organizations, but the hassle of taking on bloated platforms and carrying legacy baggage complicated matters, making it even more difficult for businesses to evolve as legacy baggage prevents growth and expansion since it anchors users to outdated technology and prohibits access to new, innovative technology.
In the evolving technology landscape, businesses now have the ability to pick and choose best of breed applications to manage certain parts of their enterprise, giving them flexibility. This also makes it more difficult for large enterprise vendors to compete, as selling their products in profitable packages is challenging. Moreover, with new integration solutions being increasingly easy to run on limited software or hardware, traditional software companies with bloated and heavy products are falling behind.
According to Peter Goldmacher, analyst for Cowen & Co:
“We believe the primary issue is a fundamental shift in the technology landscape away from legacy systems towards a new breed of better products at a lower cost both in Apps and in Data Management. Virtually every emerging software trend is having a deflationary impact on spend.”
